TURNER — At the Turner Public Library, books are just the beginning of what the community can tap into, with two free, family events offered in mid-March.
The library will offer its first Game Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 18. A variety of cooperative and competitive games will be available to try, including “Settlers of Catan,” “Munchkin,” “Ticket to Ride,” “Shadows over Camelot,” “Elder Sign” and others. The public is invited to bring their own games to set up and play.
“Many of the games we’ll have available are unlike most traditional board games,” says Luke Lorrimer, library volunteer. “These games aren’t using dice to follow a track but require plans and strategy to outwit your opponents and come out on top. From building and abandoning civilizations to acquire victory to working together as knights of the round table to protect the legacy of Camelot. Each of the games has its own flavor from 1920s horror mystery to settlers building a new nation upon an island.”
The library even has games people can borrow, like the cooperative group storytelling game, “Microscope,” and the investigative horror role playing game, “Trail of Cthulhu.”
At 7 p.m. Saturday, March 25, the library will present the local musical duo, Darlin’ Corey, in concert, as part of its promotion of its musical instrument lending collection and makers’ space. Darlin’Corey features Erica Brown on fiddle and Matt Shipman on guitar. Their flawless musicianship supports tight vocal arrangements of bluegrass, old-time, folk and original songs.
Shipman has toured Nova Scotia, North Carolina and Maine, compiling songs and stories from people he met, which later culminated as a radio documentary about traditional music in the 21st Century.
Brown has been playing fiddle almost her entire life, and has won numerous fiddle contests throughout New England and Canada. In 2003 she was awarded Junior Female Entertainer Of The Year by the Maine Country Music Association and in 2006 she received the Harold Carter Memorial Award from the Down East Country Music Association and was a recipient of a 2006 Maine Arts Commission Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Award and was recognized as a Master Artist by the Maine Arts Commission that same year. Her performance highlights include opening for Grammy award winning country music superstar Dwight Yoakam, as well as Grammy award winning bluegrass performer Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder.
