CHESTERVILLE — Code Enforcement Officer Brenda Medcoff said it will take longer than anticipated to change the name of Turner Interval Road to Huckleberry Stream Road.

The Planning Board approved the road-name-change request Jan. 10. The 45-day period for an appeal has passed, Medcoff said.

Medcoff said the process to change the road name for the state’s Enhanced 911 communications system is more complicated than she was led to believe. She is following the required steps. She didn’t know when the process would be finalized.

Scott and Megan Heikkinen requested the change last fall. They bought the large lot next to the intersection of Borough and Smith roads in 1997. The road is not included in their deed.

At a public hearing in September 2016, Fire Chief John Archer said his department reviewed road names as part of the E-911 system. The system requires that each landline phone number be linked to a unique, physical address that clearly identifies where an emergency caller is located.

The road name didn’t get put on paper at the time because the name didn’t change, Archer said.

Medcoff said the landowners were not notified when E-911 went into effect.

In October 2016, the Planning Board denied the request. The Heikkinens took the matter to the Appeals Board.

In December 2016, the Appeals Board took no action because members felt more information was needed. In January, the board referred the matter back to the Planning Board.

Information provided by Maine Municipal Association said the Appeals Board did not have the authority to act because it isn’t written into the (E-911) Ordinance.
