POLAND — Selectmen approved a land easement with the New England Forestry Foundation at their meeting Tuesday night. 

Fred Huntress, co-chairman of the Poland Conservation Commission, proposed a deal between the foundation and the town to protect the Heart of Poland, a 101-acre plot. 

Witt Beals of the New England Forestry Foundation said the group is no stranger to the town of Poland, having easements with bordering and nearby lands.

“Thanks to the first easement in Poland years ago, it set the pace for many other towns across New England,” Beals said. “It’s a wonderful trend. The land will be forever protected forestland.” 

The Board of Selectmen approved the deal and signed official documents at the meeting, making it a legally binding contract. 

In other news, the board approved a new liquor license for Fairlawn Golf Course. It recently changed ownership and an updated license had to be attained so it could keep serving beer and spirits. The license added sales of wine. 

Selectman Stephen Robinson attended his last meeting Tuesday. His term runs out March 31, and he is unable to run for another term. 

“You will be missed, Steve,” Chairman Walter Gallagher said. “We appreciate everything you’ve done for this board.” Robinson will now serve on the town charter commission. 

Gallagher pleaded for the public to vote at the town meeting Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1. 

Polls for Friday’s election will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Town Hall. “We need at least 10 registered voters to open it up,” Gallagher said.

Saturday’s business meeting begins at 9 a.m. at Poland Regional High School. The town will vote on warrant articles. At least 100 registered voters are needed to open the meeting.
