LEWISTON — Alberta M. (Martineau) Bonenfant, 98, passed peacefully Jan. 31, surrounded by family.
She was born Dec. 11, 1918, to Alphonse and Simone (St. Onge) Martineau. She married Lionel Bonenfant in 1942 and was married 38 years, until his passing in 1980. During his fight with Alzheimer’s, she was his primary caregiver for many years.
She was predeceased by brothers, Henry “Hank” (2001) and Gerard “Mac” (1997) Martineau.
She will be missed by dozens of nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews.
Alberta belonged to many church organizations. She loved to travel cross country with senior groups, and often took trips exploring new places with family. A prolific crafter and fiber artist, her busy hands shared many knitted, crocheted and sewn pieces with family and friends. Her most recent passion was quilting, and she belonged to the Krazy Kwilters of Lisbon, actively quilting and creating until the week before her death.
She was a strong and proud person who lived completely independently in her own home.
A special thank-you to neighbors and close friends who kept a watchful eye on her. I am very grateful to all of you.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
