100 years ago, 1917
Your country and your flag asks for you. “For the purpose of recruiting the National Guard organizations up to the maximum statutory strength until further orders, recruiting stations will be established in all armories. The recruiting parties will consist of two enlisted men for each organization who will be detailed by the organization commander.” These orders were received by the company commanders of the Coast Artillery companies in Lewiston and Auburn. Before the sun had broken thru the clouds and Thursday morning had even begun to grow old, the officers in the Third Company, Auburn, the Eighth and Ninth, Lewiston, had established recruiting stations.

50 years ago, 1967
The Marcel Motors firm of 1155 Lisbon Street, Lewiston, is presently building an addition which will be a seven-stall service area. The new part is 145 feet long and 60 feet deep. Construction of the $100,000 addition was started in August of last year. The owners expect to be able to use the area in a couple of months.

25 years ago, 1992
City officials kicked off a major push Sunday night to bring a proposed regional nursing home for veterans to Lewiston, as they accused Rumford of “politicizing” the selection process and setting the two communities on a collision course. “The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and we feel very strongly that it should be located here in Lewiston,” Mayor James P. Howaniec told an assembly of 18 city veterans in his office Sunday night. “We hope the facility will be located in the Lewiston-Auburn area, and more specifically Lewiston.”
