100 years ago, 1917
Custer Post, Grand Army of the Republic, is filled with patriotism these days. The boys are a bit stiff in the joints but each and all declare that they are ready to do their bit in the scrap now at hand. The meeting in their hall on Lisbon street was well attended and the fires of patriotism gleamed in every eye. Adjutant Moses King made a fiery speech and declared his willingness to go to the front once more in spite of his 84 years. He is still spry as a kitten, and as full of ginger as in the days of old.

50 years ago, 1967
Ground was broken this afternoon for a 152-apartment complex to be built at an estimated cost of $1,130,000 in an area off Montello Street Extension, Lewiston. The construction project includes 16 two-story “garrison” type units housing the “medium income” apartments on a 25-acre site west of the Central Maine Power Co. garage on land formerly used by the Thurston Riding School. To be known as the Tall Pines Apartments, the development is that of Herman Brettman of Boston. The complex will be built partly with funds made available by the Federal Housing Administration.

25 years ago, 1992
Plans to build a sludge composting facility in south Auburn got one step closer Thursday when the city Planning Board approved the application in a 5-0 vote. The Lewiston-Auburn Water Pollution Control Authority still must obtain permits from the state Department of Environmental Protection before it can award a contract to begin construction of the facility on a 10-acre portion of the Roger Gauthier farm on Penley Corner Road. Area residents expressed disappointment and vowed to continue to fight to stop the DEP permits or to appeal the Planning Board decision in Superior Court. The board voted to approve the site plan approval and special exemption permit to allow the facility to operate in the city’s Agricultural and Resource Protection District after four hours of deliberations. The board listed more than 20 conditions that the authority will be required to meet to operate the facility in Auburn.
