WILTON — Selectpersons have approved an application for a $150,000 Community Development Block Grant for downtown business improvements.

At a public hearing Tuesday, consultant Darryl Sterling said the grant will pay for sidewalk upgrades, new streetlights, improved building facades and parking in Monument Square. A goal is to improve six to eight building facades using the grant funds.

The maximum amount that a business could be reimbursed for using the grant funds is $25,000.

Sterling said the grant will spur private investment and help with community pride and job creation.

“There are a number of activities that could be considered for facade improvements,” he said. “The only downside is the pool statewide for this grant category is only $750,000.”

Sterling noted there were 21 applicants, and Wilton would have to submit a strong application to receive funds. Nevertheless, he was enthused about the possibilities.

“I’m excited for Wilton to do this,” he said.

In other business Tuesday:

* Selectpersons voted in favor of R.S. Osgood & Son’s quote of $20,468 for cemetery mowing equipment and voted to accept a 7- by 14-foot trailer from Cushman’s Garage for $2,800. Money for the cemetery equipment and trailer will come from cemetery trust funds.

* Nomination papers are available for two seats on the Board of Selectpersons and one on the Regional School Unit 9 board of directors. So far, Keith Swett and David Leavitt are running unopposed for the selectperson seats. Irving Faunce is running unopposed for the seat on the RSU 9 board.
