The latest storm to hit New England brought the threat of flooding, instead of snow, as heavy rain swept across the region on Thursday.

The National Weather Service issued flood advisories and watches for portions of the region as the rain began falling across the six states.

There were a few flood warnings but it appeared that the region could be spared the worst, said Margaret Curtis from the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine. “It’s beginning to seem less likely that we’ll see widespread flooding,” she said.

Rainfall, which was heavy at times, postponed opening day for minor league baseball teams the Portland Sea Dogs and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The Boston Red Sox-Pirates game at Fenway Park also was postponed.

Weather officials were keeping an eye on the rain, because heavy rain combined with snowmelt could still create the potential for flooding. Officials planned to keep tabs on river levels all the way through the weekend.
