100 years ago, 1917
Captain Farnham and Major Moriarty of the United States Army were present for the faculty meeting of Bates College Thursday to give an outline of the proposed reserve corps. Captain Farnham spoke more than an hour and later answered questions. The next stop will be the unfolding of the plan to the students of the college. If a sufficient number offer themselves for members of the corps, steps will be taken to procure the necessary guns, uniforms and equipment. This training will not be compulsory.

50 years ago, 1967
Members of the Lewiston Board of Health and Welfare expressed concern Monday night over the health officer’s report indicating that some 889 Lewiston schoolchildren were given emergency measles inoculations during a recent outbreak of that disease. “This report shows that at least that many children did not come to the measles clinic when we held it,” commented Mrs. Maria Robinson. “We are obviously not getting enough publicity on this matter, and this report proves that the program should be carried out with the schools’ help.”

25 years ago, 1992
The City of Lewiston, both the seller and only bidder at an auction Friday, paid $5,000 for some 150 pieces of Bates Fabrics’ operating equipment. The auction, however, resolved only one of the many questions surrounding the future of the 142-year-old textile mill. For now, the once-giant company will continue making bedspreads with its 60 employees, and may even call back 15 laid off workers to expedite recent orders, said President Fred Lebel. “We’re keeping going,” he said after the auction. “I feel good about it.” Over the long term, “there’s a wide range or possibilities,” said Bates Fabrics attorney Stephen Beale.
