LEWISTON — Charles “Charlie” E. Proffitt Sr., 69, of East Dixfield passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 13, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

He was born in London, Ky., on April 9, 1948, a son of Mary Proffitt.

Charlies proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He was the owner and operator of “Veteran’s Taxi” service for several years.

Charlie loved hunting, fishing, playing horseshoes and putting a smile on people’s faces while showing his Southern pride.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Proffitt of East Dixfield; his children, Brenda Nider of Rumford, Mary Greco of East Dixfield, Layrue Marie Proffitt of East Dixfield, Charles E. Proffitt Jr. and wife, Patsy, of Henderson, N.C., Mary Elizabeth Proffitt of Louisburg, N.C., and Anita Carol Proffitt of Oxford, N.C.; a stepbrother, Theodore Israel of Manson, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Sadie May.

He was predeceased by his mother; a daughter, Cindy Marie Proffitt; a son, Brian James Proffitt; and a granddaughter, Brittany Marie Vaughn.
