HALLOWELL —  The Harlow Gallery presents a retrospective exhibition and sale of works by Maine physician, poet and artist Hector Arrache. The retrospective is on view at 160 Water St. , April 19-28, with an opening reception on Friday, April 21, from 5-7 p.m. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Arrache passed away unexpectedly in April of 2016. His family has generously donated a large body of his work to the Harlow for the purpose of benefiting the nonprofit gallery that Arrache frequented for more than 25 years. 

Born in 1927 in Mexico City, Mexico, Arrache was known for his colorful and sometimes graphic images that evoked the sensibilities of his homeland. He painted traditional portraiture, still lifes and landscapes, but also painted images with religious and mythological themes. Arrache’s response when asked about his paintings, “I am Mexican and we have different customs, such as a belief in witchcraft and celebrations for the dead. I am Catholic and I am also a doctor; I have seen a lot of blood in my life. My work reflects all of these things.”

Arrache was an orthopedic surgeon who graduated from the University of Mexico with a medical doctorate and practiced orthopedic surgery in Connecticut and Maine. He was also an artist and poet. Some venues where his work has been ework include The Harlow Gallery, Lewiston-Auburn College Atrium Art Gallery in Auburn, and the York Art Association in York.
