LEWISTON — LUNAFEST, an annual fundraising film festival dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmakers, and bringing women together in their communities, will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at The Public Theater, 31 Maple St.

The festival highlights women as leaders in society, illustrated through nine short films by women filmmakers. The films range from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, motherhood, body image, aging, cultural diversity and breaking barriers.

Proceeds will benefit the participating agencies of LA Women Rising with 15 percent returned to LUNAFEST for Breast Cancer Prevention Partners. In addition to ticket sales, there will be a 50/50 raffle. All sponsoring agencies will be present with information.

LA Women Rising is a collaborative effort between The Center for Wisdom’s Women, Safe Voices, Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services, and the YWCA of Central Maine.

The agencies have partnered to raise awareness about violence against women. Their efforts have two goals: Build an ongoing network of support and advocacy around the issue of violence against women and girls, and lead people to action steps that will promote long-term change.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at lunafest.org/lewiston0517.
