NORWAY — The Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine has added Tai Chi and Mindfulness classes to its list of May programming. 

The Center offers free programs to anyone impacted by cancer. Visitors may to stop by for information and to join activities. Classes are held at the Center in the Stephens Memorial Hospital Specialty Clinic building, 199 Main St., unless otherwise noted.

Banding Together To Restore: 10 to 11 a.m. Mondays, May 1, 8, 16, 22 and 29, at Richard Bader Physical Therapy, 176 Main St. The program, lead by Lori Britting, is focused on regaining motion and strength through guided instruction using stretching and colored bands. Each participant will be encouraged to work within their abilities that will safely gain their desired goals. Preregistration is encouraged by contacting the Center or by arriving 15 minutes early to the class to register.

Qi Gong & Tai Chi: 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays, May 1, 8, and 16. Betsey Foster will introduce participants to Qi Gong. Students will learn the slow, deliberate movements, which help improve balance and muscle control. Pre-registration is encouraged.

Yoga Warriors: 3 to 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at Posabilities, 15 Tannery St. This free gentle yoga class will support healthy living for individuals facing the challenges of cancer through gentle movement and breath, supportive restorative yoga postures, and guided mediation and relaxation. Preregistration is encouraged by contacting the Center or by arriving 15 minutes early to the class to register.

Yoga for Wellness: 8 to 9 a.m. Fridays. The class will teach breathing, movement and relaxing meditation while seated or standing. 


Chair Yoga: 2 to 3 p.m. Fridays. Yoga will be performed from seated positions. Mats will not be neccessary, and chairs will be provided.

Walk and Talk with David: David will share his favorite walking routes around Norway and Paris for a time of conversation and exercise. Walks may be scheduled by contacting 207-739-7027.

Guided Meditation Gathering: 1 to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 10. Guided meditation, led by Susan Kane, encourages those present to use their imagination and five senses to relax, which in turn helps to lower stress.

Mindfulness: 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, May 18. This is the opportunity to learn how to live in the moment and relax using mindfulness, led by Victoria. Pre-registration is encouraged by calling the Center.

Reiki Introduction Presentation: 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, May 12. Charlotte Labelle of Teresia Reiki will demonstrate how Reiki helps to alleviate stress and promote relaxation.

Reiki 1 — Self Care: 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 23. Charlotte Labelle of Teresia Reiki will teach participants how to practice Reiki on themselves. Appoints may also be made for individual sessions between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. 


10 Tips for Health: Noon to 1 p.m. Monday, May 8. Kate Goldberg, community Nutrition Educator from Healthy Oxford Hills, has a blender powered by a bicycle and will be making smoothies. 

Stampin’ Up: 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 2. Kathy will provide materials and instruction to make a variety of cards. 

Community Cancer Cut and Sew: 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, May 10 and 24, and from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Sew Orchid Design, 316 Main St. Participants will cut out material for bonnets and other comfort items needed by the Center. Sewing kits are assembled for people to take home to sew or they may be sewn while there.

Fabric Crafting with Barbara: 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Sew Orchid Design, 316 Main St. Barbara Daigle will teach a series of non-sewing or beginner sewing crafts.

Beading Project: Monday, May 22, at Lively Accents, 310 Main St. Cathy always has a fun project for participants to do. 

Knitting and Crocheting: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays. Participants can learn to knit or crochet, bring in a project or help make hats for Center clients.


Coloring for Adults: 1 to 2 p.m. Thursdays. Coloring books and a variety of markers will be available.

Cards and Games: 1 to 2 p.m. Fridays. Various games are available at the Center to play or participants may bring one of their own to get a game started.

Drop in hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; volunteers will be available to provide comfort items such as port protectors, wigs, hats, pillows or find resources. Visitors can pick up brochures or use the lending library. The Center is also a place to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, chat with a volunteer.
