Jeffrey Haynes, 47, of East Dixfield and Kent Mitchell, 70, of Jay were injured Thursday when their vehicles, a pickup truck and SUV, respectively, collided on Jay Hill on Route 4 in Jay near the Jay Public Works Department Garage, Jay Detective Michael Mejia said. The SUV failed to yield while pulling out of from Old Jay Hill Road, he said.

JAY — Two people were injured late Thursday afternoon when an SUV and pickup collided on Jay Hill on Route 4 near the Jay Public Works Garage, Police Detective Michael Mejia said Friday.

The investigation determined that Jeffrey Haynes, 47, of East Dixfield was driving his 1996 Ford F-250 north on Route 4, also known as Main Street, when a 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor driven by Kent Mitchell, 70, of Jay failed to yield while pulling out from Old Jay Hill Road, Mejia said.

The vehicles collided causing significant damage to the front-end of the truck and the front-driver side of the SUV.

Mitchell was knocked briefly unconscious but awoke by the time Mejia arrived on the scene of the 5:37 p.m. accident. Officer Michael Booker, also the fire chief, arrived ahead of him.

A registered nurse who witnessed the crash stopped and immediately checked on Mitchell while he was unconscious and confirmed he had a pulse and was breathing, Mejia said.

Both drivers were taken by NorthStar EMS ambulance personnel to a hospital for further medical evaluation.

“Upon my arrival one driver was out of the vehicle with visible injuries to his hand,” Mejia said.

Mitchell was still in his vehicle because he was unable to open the door.

Jay Fire Rescue Department was able to get him out of the SUV, he said.
