JAY — Two people were injured late Thursday afternoon when an SUV and pickup collided on Jay Hill on Route 4 near the Jay Public Works Garage, Police Detective Michael Mejia said Friday.

The investigation determined that Jeffrey Haynes, 47, of East Dixfield was driving his 1996 Ford F-250 north on Route 4, also known as Main Street, when a 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor driven by Kent Mitchell, 70, of Jay failed to yield while pulling out from Old Jay Hill Road, Mejia said.

Mitchell was knocked briefly unconscious but awoke by the time Mejia arrived on the scene of the 5:37 p.m. accident. Officer Michael Booker, also the fire chief, arrived ahead of him.

A registered nurse who witnessed the crash stopped and immediately checked on Mitchell while he was unconscious and confirmed he had a pulse and was breathing, Mejia said.
