LEWISTON — A local man reported missing in Knox County earlier this week is wanted on charges that he sexually assaulted a child over a period of months, police said Friday.

Kevin C. Mitchell, 44, is named in warrants charging him with four counts of gross sexual assault and three counts of unlawful sexual contact.

Investigators said the victim is younger than 12 years old. The sexual abuse shortly after Christmas, police said, and continued into April.

On Tuesday, police were notified that Mitchell had been listed as a missing person Saturday. Investigators said his car had been found in the town of Union on Tuesday night.

Police in Knox County, with the help of the Maine Warden’s K-9 unit, conducted a search of the area Tuesday night but said Mitchell was not located.

Police said Mitchell lives in Lewiston but has ties to Knox County.

Police said he is 6 feet, 1 inch tall, weighs 220 pounds, and has  graying hair and blue eyes.
