OXFORD — For the fifth year, the Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club is sponsoring three bridge games on Wednesday, June 21, to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association.

The club is inviting all bridge players to join for a day of fun and fundraising to help research and support caregivers of the disease that affects more than 5 million Americans.

The Alzheimer’s Association has called all volunteers to sponsor their favorite activity on “The Longest Day” to raise money and awareness.

Alzheimer’s accounts for 50 to 80 percent of dementia cases. It has no cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

Playing bridge is known to help keep minds sharp and in doing so fight Alzheimer’s, according to researchers.

This year’s games will be held at the Oxford Community Center, King Street. The first game starts at 9 a.m. followed by a free lunch, donated by local area businesses.

The second game starts at 1:30 p.m. with pizza for supper.

The third game begins at 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded the winners.

The club will have games for social bridge players as well as duplicate. Players from all over the state are expected to participate, and a group from Vermont that returns regularly to play.

Last year the club raised close to $15,000 and members hope to contribute more this year, with the fundraising conducted by bridge club members.

There is a  $10 fee for playing or a free game may be obtained through a $50 donation. Two free games may be earned by bringing in a donation of $75 and three free games through a donation of $100.
