AUBURN — Minard N. Roberts Jr., 89, of Mechanic Falls, died Friday, June 16, at Clover Manor in Auburn.
On May 23, 1928, he was born in Auburn to Minard N. Roberts Sr. and Ethel Wilson Roberts. He attended schools in Mechanic Falls, graduating from Mechanic Falls High School in 1946, and on Jan. 23, 1949, married Ruth May Danforth in Mechanic Falls. He married his second wife, Marion Danforth Fifield, on May 27, 1972.
He worked for J.W. Penney Machine Shop briefly, then worked for a furniture shop. He began his longest job at Waterfalls Tissue as a machine operator, continued working for the mill when it changed hands to Ponds Tissue and Marcal. He studied to become a boiler operator and worked for Marcal and Pineland before retiring.
He traveled several states in the South and West to visit relatives and friends and got to see some of the wonders of the country. He really enjoyed candlepin bowling, playing on several leagues during his working years and after retirement. His fondest purchase was a 1942 John Deere that he won awards. He was a member of the Oxford Grange and Waterford Grange. Other interests included four-wheeling and relaxing at his camp on Whitney Pond. He also loved to get a meal at area restaurants with his many friends.
Minard is survived by one sister, Roberta, and her husband, Wayne Ross; his fellow traveler and companion, Nellie Roberts; and his children, son Kenneth E. and wife, Sandra Roberts, of Mechanic Falls, son Edward W. and wife, Geri Roberts, of Hebron, daughter Linda L. and husband, Leon Newton, of Mechanic Falls, son Thomas L. and wife, Dianne Roberts, of Mechanic Falls, daughter Patricia Connant of Mechanic Falls, son Michael A. Roberts of Mechanic Falls and daughter Janice E. Hatch and companion, Dale Hafford, of Mechanic Falls. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his father and mother; one brother, Edgar; both of his wives, Ruth and Marion; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
