49 years ago     

Some $150 of funds which were collections of the Livermore Falls Water District were stolen from Latham’s Service Station Sunday night, according to the Superintendent and Treasurer. Some of the money was in checks on which payment has been stopped. The stubs from the receipts of collections were taken, too. Other money in the station was not disturbed. The break is being investigated.

The Town of Livermore Falls has just finished numbering the dutch elm infected trees on the north side of Depot Street to the Chisholm line. The numbers are from 1 to 99 and the numbers are painted on in red. If anyone wants information on a numbered has an elm tree that is numbered and information is desired, about the tree, call the town office.

A & P Food stores will discontinue distribution of Plaid Trading Stamps in the 90 stores operated by the Portland Unit effective Monday, July 22, 1968.The stamp program has been in effect since February, 1962. 

Stamps are being discontinued in the Portland Unit because the response and acceptance to this promotional device was less successful than in some other areas.

Miss Kristy Foster of North Jay took part Saturday, July 6, in the horse show held at Greene. She and her horse received several ribbons.

The Strawberry Festival held Saturday evening at the Fayette Baptist Church was reported well attended and a grand success.

25 years ago

United Paperworkers International President Felix Jacques said he thinks the union has a better than even chance of winning a de-certification vote set for July 16 and 17.

In anticipation of a union victory, Local 14 union members have been meeting with employees who work in different areas of the mill to begin the process of formulating what Mr. Jacques called local agenda items.

These local agenda items would become part of the negotiation process for a new contract. The anniversary date of the contract is September 30.

There was something for everyone to enjoy during Norlands Heritage Days, June 25 to June 28.

A Victorian fashion show was held on the veranda with men’s, women’s and children’s styles.

Later, it was standing room only for the re-enactment of a military, Civil War era, wedding in the Norlands church.

Soldiers gave a  realistic performance of a Civil War battle. 

Young visitors learned about the games children played in the 1870s and cuddled kittens found in the barn.

The Otis Specialty Papers tower will be five feet lower, temporarily, as changes are made to create better emissions control.

The tower is having five feet removed to allow for installation of a cone-shaped top which will help push emissions higher into the air. The modifications should be completed by the end of this week.

Wild rides and some hot fiddlin’ provided rodeo fans with plenty of excitement over the weekend as the third annual Franklin County Rodeo and Fiddling Contest pulled out all the stops.

At the Farmington Fairgrounds, approximately 2,400 spectators filled the stands for Saturday’s events. Nearly the same number came out for Sunday’s performance.

A summer sidewalk art show is being planned at the Jay Plaza for amateur artists.

Jay Plaza merchants will be offering cash prizes to winning entrants.

The Jay Plaza sidewalk will be lined with displays of paintings, photography, sculptures, and other artistic expressions on Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The merchants hope to raise $1,500 in entry fees from the art exhibits so that they can award the cash prizes and make a profit to buy Christmas lights for the plaza.
