50 years ago, 1967
Two youths, apprehended at gunpoint by Auburn Police early Thursday morning on the roof of the Fantastic Fair at the Center Street Shopping Plaza, were being interrogated by authorities at 1:30 a.m. today. Patrolmen Rene Lavoie and William Fournier took the pair into custody about five minutes after police received a call from a passing motorist that he had seen two persons running around on the building’s roof. Patrolman Peter Haskell, on desk duty at police headquarters, dispatched all APD cruisers to the scene with the first unit arriving in a matter of seconds, and the others pulling up minutes later. Although it could not immediately be confirmed, it was reported the two were armed but hid their weapons when officers poured into the area. Police later recovered two revolvers in the area.

Lightning blew out transformers and splintered trees in Lewiston and Auburn as an afternoon thunderstorm ripped through the area Thursday. The storm was one of several with moderate winds, heavy rain and frequent lightning that sped throughout the southwestern part of the state at about 45 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Pea-size hail was reported in Topsham, Lisbon Falls, and Falmouth, the weather service said. The worst storms were concentrated in the Portland and Sebago Lake areas, as well as Lewiston, Brunswick, Knox County and Rockland. Lightning caused scattered power failures.
