DURHAM — Ernest F. Tebbets, 94, passed away peacefully at his home with his children at his side Friday, July 21. He was born in Durham on Feb. 8, 1923, the son of the late Charles II and Elsie Tebbets.

Ernest was a lifelong resident of Durham, and received his education in both Durham and Auburn schools, later graduating from Edward Little High School in 1941 with a scholarship in manual arts. He later took a welding course from Bath Iron Works and worked there. Most of his working career was as a master electrician at U.S. Gypsum, Worumbo Mill, Philips Elmet and Maine Electronics. He retired June 1, 1987, from L.L. Bean. On June 22, 1944, he married the love of his life, Mildred Louise Brown.

Ernest left a tremendous footprint in the community as he was actively involved in many groups and organizations. Ernest was a member of the First Congregational Church of Durham, a 76-year member of the Eureka and Pine Tree Grange of Maine, a member of Acacia Lodge of AF and AM No. 121, a 32nd degree Shriner of Lewiston, a member and chairman of the School Committee, Chairman of the School Building Committee for the four-room consolidated school, and a three-year member of the Solid Waste Committee. He was the second electrical inspector for Durham for 16 years. Ernest was the last original founding member of the Durham Rod and Gun Club established in 1960, of which he was treasurer for 32 years. He was also an active member of the Durham Eureka Community Center Restoration Project. Ernest truly had a passion for his family, his friends, the Maine outdoors, and for volunteering in his community.
