With great sadness I read about the sale of the Sun Journal.
Four generations of the Costello family have been opinion leaders in Lewiston-Auburn. They have run a remarkable enterprise, which included the daily newspaper I have read every single morning for nearly 40 years.
The newspaper is clearly a business — but it is a great community service as well.
I have had the privilege of knowing only two generations of the Costello family, but deeply appreciate all the work they have done to produce a high quality local paper for our area. In addition, I have admired how they have continually changed the business enterprise to keep it relevant and thriving.
Thanks also to the members of the family for their volunteer service and leadership of a number of community organizations. They have been leaders of this community for generations! And I hope they will continue that leadership.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
