FARMINGTON — Regional School Unit 9 voters will consider a proposed $33.9 million budget Thursday, Aug. 3, in a validation referendum at the polls in each of the 10 district towns.

The proposal represents a $1.18 million increase over last year and factors in an additional $729,954 in state education revenue. Of that amount, $378,165 was targeted to reduce tax assessments to towns and $165,018 was to lower the proposed amount that would need to be borrowed through a bond for capital improvement projects. Voters approved a $317,834 capital project June 13.

Voters approved the new budget proposal of $33.9 million July 25 to go to a yes or no referendum during the district-wide budget vote. The hours the polls are open in each town vary.

This will be the second voting process this year as the district tries to get a budget approved for 2017-18 budget. The first proposal 0f $33.89 million, a $1.14 million increase from last year, failed at the polls by a vote of 1,458 to 1,643 on June 13.

The projected assessments under the new proposed $33.9 million budget changed once the article pertaining to regular instruction was increased by $24,970 by voters last week to $10.31 million.

Voters added in $24,970 for a part-time American Sign Language teaching position. There is currently a half-time ASL position at Mt. Blue High School. The addition of the part-time position would create a full-time position and allow students to further their education in the world language subject.
