NORWAY — Norway Memorial Library’s Morning Book Club will host a discussion of  “Lincoln in the Bardo” by George Saunders at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8.

During the beginning of the Civil War, President Lincoln’s son, Willie, dies and finds himself in a strange purgatory. It is where ghosts mingle, gripe, commiserate, quarrel and enact bizarre acts of penance. Within this transitional state called, in the Tibetan tradition, the bardo, a monumental struggle erupts over young Willie’s soul.

The club will discuss a work of nonfiction at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19. “The Stranger in the Woods” by Michael Finkel is the story of a man who lived alone in a tent in the Maine woods, never talking to another person and surviving by stealing supplies from nearby cabins for 27 years.

At the same time on Tuesday, Oct. 10, the club will discuss “The Stars are Fire” by Anita Shreve.

In October 1947 after a summer-long drought, fires began near Bar Harbor and raced along the coast of Maine, ravaging 200,000 acres. This was the largest fire in Maine’s history. Five months pregnant, Grace Holland is left alone to protect her two toddlers when her husband, Gene, joins the volunteers fighting to bring the fire under control.

The book club is open to the public. Attendees are asked to bring their own coffee or tea. A morning snack is provided. The discussion lasts about an hour and is hosted by Beth Kane.
