JAY — A Lisbon truck driver told police Tuesday that he swerved the tractor-trailer he was driving to avoid an animal on Route 4, causing the trailer to break a utility pole on Jay Hill.

Driver Kristopher Benoit, 51, of Lisbon was not injured in the accident that occurred across from Northside Auto at about 9:03 a.m., Detective Michael Mejia said.

When the tires left the roadway on the right side, the weight of the load of glass jars pulled the tractor and trailer into the pole, Detective Michael Mejia said in an email. The pole broke in half and caused the overhead wires to hang low but did not damage them or cause a power outage.

Benoit was driving for SPC Transport of Auburn. The trailer was damaged but the tractor was not, Mejia said.

Jay Fire Department assisted with traffic control. One lane remained opened during the investigation, however, traffic was stopped temporarily when the wrecker worked to pull the tractor-trailer to the roadway, he said.
