SCARBOROUGH — John J. LoCascio Jr., 67, of Scarborough passed away on Friday, Aug. 18, after a short battle with cancer.

John was born in 1950 in New York City, the son of John and Phyllis LoCascio. He grew up in the Bronx and attended Fordham Preparatory School in New York City before graduating from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., in 1972. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine from State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate in 1977 and completed his residency in Springfield, Mass.

John was a physician and partner at Mount David Clinical Associates in Lewiston until 1990. He then left his internal medicine practice to work as a medical director in leading global disability insurance companies. The family would like to thank Drs. Tom Reeder and Nancy Heimonen and his employer, Mutual of Omaha, for their compassion during John’s illness.

John was a fellow of the American College of Physicians, The American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians and the Royal Society of Medicine in the U.K. He was also on the executive committee of the American Academy of Insurance Medicine. He had a keen interest in teaching and writing, had numerous publications and presented regularly at conferences in the U.S. and abroad.

John, also known as “J Lo,” was a hockey enthusiast and occasional penalty box judge for the Portland Pirates, cooking aficionado, fantasy league troublemaker, car maintenance guru, music lover and reader of endlessly long history books.

He enjoyed his second home in Caterham, England, and was able to travel all over Europe. He was also known for his trademark collared shirts, sweater vests and baseball hats. He was a proud father of his talented daughters and an equally proud Pops who loved Skyping with his grandchildren in Iowa. He was a constant figure on the sidelines of his grandchildren’s sporting events in Scarborough.

John is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Karen; daughters, Meghan Ganschow and husband, Scott, and children, Hazel and Sean, of West Burlington, Iowa, Caitlin LoCascio-King, her husband, Jason, and children, Abram, Darius, Gabriel and Junia, of Scarborough, and Shannon LoCascio of Scarborough; sisters, Donna Hellriegel and Joan Meaney and their families, all of N.J.; and his faithful bichon sidekick, Kebo. His last days were also brightened by dear friends, David and Donna Walter of Bangor, to whom the family is forever grateful.
