AUBURN — Louise A. Mayo Griffin of 210 Park Ave. turned 101 on Tuesday, Aug. 29. She was born in Augusta in 1916 and has been a resident of Auburn for 77 years after spending two years in Augusta, four years in Bath and 18 years in Lewiston.
She received happy birthday wishes from President Donald Trump via a letter earlier in the month after her eldest grandson sent an email to the president about his grandmother.
She has one son and two daughters, Pete, Roberta and Roxana. She has six grandsons and nine great-grandchildren, of which two are boys and seven girls.
She is an avid gardener and grows flowers every year to cut and take to church every Sunday and Wednesday. She loves feeding the birds and watching the wildlife in her backyard. She reads two or three books a week from the Auburn Library.
She watches her favorite shows, “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy,” every evening and works on puzzles like crossword and Sudoku in the newspaper every day. She also plays Boggle and Scrabble, all to keep her mind sharp.
She is a member and has been attending the Christian Science church for 98 years. She graduated high school at age 16 and is a retired teacher after teaching for 21 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree at age 53 and a master’s degree at age 56 because she liked going to school.
