High school sports coverage is proudly supported by Maine State Credit Union.
Coach: Jim Hersom (fourth year)
Region: D South
Last year’s record: 5-4, lost in Class D South semifinals
Returning athletes: Seniors — Cooper Chiasson (RB/DL), Luke Lueders (QB/DB), Cam Turner (RB/LB); Jon Wainwright (OL/LB), Dalton Berry (OL/DL), Quentin Penley (OL/DL ); Juniors — Alex Gorham (RB/LB), Jack Lavorgna (OL/DL)); Sophomore — Trent Tibbetts (G/DT).
Key losses: Bryce Whittemore (OL/LB), Hunter White (RB/DB), Kyle Swett (OL/DL).
Promising newcomers: None at press time.
What to expect: The Cougars graduated just five seniors and numbers are up, so they should have more depth after being dangerously thin at times last season. Most of the backfield remains in place, led by Leuders and Chiasson. Berry, Lavorgna, Wainwright and Penley return on the offensive line. The defensive front is equally strong and anchors what should be an improved defense. If it stays healthy, Dirigo will be a team to watch in the new Class D South.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
