NEW GLOUCESTER — Janet Gray Crosson, 80, died Monday, Aug. 28.

Janet (Jan) Crosson was born Dec. 8, 1936, in Akron, OH, and grew up in Mansfield, OH. She was a graduate of Ohio University at Athens where she received a bachelor’s in fine arts. She also completed graduate work at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Liberty. With this degree, she taught hand weaving, did layout work for George Shumway Publishing in York, Pa., and was a curator at York, Pa., Historical Society.

Her interest in early hand-woven coverlets lead to forming her own consulting business: Old Fibers, Weavers, and Coverlets. Through this business, she researched and documented weavers, coverlets, pattern books and weave structures in the mid-Atlantic and mid-Western states. This resulted in several technical publications.

Janet enjoyed the outdoors, nature, and gardening. She volunteered with the Seed Project at the Landis Valley Farm Museum in Lancaster, Pa.

Janet introduced her love of Maine to her daughter through sailing trips on the Mary Day Schooner out of Camden.

Following a stroke in 2014, Janet came to Maine to be near her daughter. She is much loved and will be missed.

She was preceded in death by Roger M. and Elizabeth (Bennett) Gray, parents, of Mansfield, OH.

Survivors are M. Bennett and Evie Gray, brother and sister-in-law, Colorado; Sabrina Lee, niece, Colorado; Bruce Gray, nephew, Arizona; Ketra S. Crosson, daughter, Maine; Alita Crosson, granddaughter, Maine; niece, nephew, and grandnieces and grandnephew, Colorado; second cousins, Ohio and Florida.
