Mary E. Gledhill, beloved wife for 55 years to Thomas Gledhill, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 7.
Born in Lewiston on Sept. 17, during the great hurricane of 1938, she was the daughter of the late Helen (Kenney) Shortill and Ray Shortill. She was the devoted mother of Kathryn Gledhill-Earls and husband Michael of Wrentham, Maria Walsh and husband John of New Bedford, John Gledhill and partner Jean Teillon of Brookline and Susanna Gledhill of Centerville, and the cherished grandmother of Nicholas Earls and wife Chelsi, Patrick Earls, Helena Earls and Michael Earls, Jack Walsh, Joseph Walsh and Maggie Walsh, Liam Gledhill and Anna Gledhill, Sean Downs, Elizabeth Downs and Daniel Downs.
Mary was predeceased by her brother, David Shortill. A graduate of Bates College, Mary was a high school math teacher in Maine while her husband was pursuing his degree. After moving to Massachusetts, Mary’s life revolved around raising her children, teaching CCD, playing tennis and enjoying annual trips to Cape Cod and Bar Harbor. She was a 35-year communicant of St Mark’s Church in North Attleboro. Her wit, sharp intellect and keen observations will be sadly missed.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
