LEWISTON — After a $12,000 wheelchair was stolen from a man recently, another Lewiston resident had her electric wheelchair stolen Sunday evening. 

Mary Ann Thompson, a double amputee, said her wheelchair was stolen from behind her apartment on Bartlett Street. 

Lewiston Police Sgt. Dave St. Pierre said Thompson filed a report Monday morning.

Thompson said she last saw the wheelchair around 10 p.m. Sunday. The wheelchair is valued at about $1,500. 

According to St. Pierre, Thompson said it’s been stored in the same place for three years and there’s never been a problem. 

He said there are no suspects and they don’t believe this is related to last week’s incident. 

“This seems like it was crime of opportunity. Someone saw it and took it,” St. Pierre said. “It’s pretty difficult given we don’t have any suspects, but we’ll canvas the neighborhood.”

George Simmons, who lives on Blake Street, was in the hospital when his motorized wheelchair was stolen off his front porch where it was stored and charged. 

Police said Simmons’ chair was recovered the next day when somebody tried to sell it.
