A driver from Jay was killed Monday afternoon when the box truck he was driving struck the back of a tractor-trailer on I-95 in Etna, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

Troopers said Joseph Lawler, 56, was trapped in the wreckage and died at the scene. Half a dozen passers-by, including three nurses, attempted to administer first aid, McCausland said in a news release.

Troopers said the tractor-trailer was hauling small pieces of granite and had just pulled into the southbound travel lane after being stopped along the breakdown lane. The big rig was operated by Paul Bean Jr., 55, of Corinth, McCausland said.

The big rig was owned by W T Rand and the box truck was being leased by Fred’s Coffee, he said.

Traffic was blocked at the crash site from about 2 to 6 p.m.

Troopers said there are no known witnesses to the crash, but three tractor-trailers had just passed Bean’s truck moments before the crash and they are asking for anyone who may have seen what happened to call State Police in Bangor.
