100 years ago, 1917
The annual corn roast of the AFCO club was held at Mr. Atherton’s cottage at Lake Auburn on Wednesday evening. The club is made up of employees of the Atherton chain of stores. The party left the Lewiston store promptly at six o’clock going in six automobiles. By 6:30 they were all ready for the fine menu which was prepared under the direction of Messrs. Littlefield and Harper. The corn was roasted by a fireplace in front of the cottage and the event was declared to be “the best ever.” During the evening there was music and dancing, with music for the dance on the Columbia Grafonola.

50 years ago, 1967
Earlier this week it was bear. Now, it’s moose. A Durham woman, Mrs. Lorraine Emerson of South West Bend, called the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department Wednesday and informed lawmen that three large moose were in her backyard. She said she was concerned that the moose – the largest she had ever seen – would injure her horse, tied up at the side of a barn. The Sheriff’s Department referred the case to a game warden.

25 years ago, 1992
Athletes will compete out of town, but students will forfeit academic trips while the Auburn School Department copes with a bus driver shortage, outdated routes and crowding. “It’s really a shame,” said Linda Burgess, transportation director. “I know the kids look forward to those trips, and so do the teachers. But I’m batting zero. The minute I get five steps ahead, I’m five steps back.” Burgess herself is behind the wheel, and has drafted qualified mechanics and maintenance workers as well. “I’m hoping to get everything back to normal as soon as possible, maybe in a couple of months,” she said. “We’ve got people who have applied, and they’re in training. But it takes time.” Administrators have decided that athletes will be driven to out-of-town games, she said. “The kids can still go to the post office and things like that. It’s the longer trips that are a problem,” she said. “Last year we had five kindergarten routes. This year we have 10.”
