The Androscoggin Retired Educators’ Association (AREA) participated in the 9/11 Day of Caring by doing a Backpack Project. AREA selects part of Androscoggin County each year. This year the towns selected were Greene, Leeds, Turner, Sabattus, Wales, Litchfield, Lisbon and Lisbon Falls. Fifteen schools grades K-12 were each delivered two age-appropriate backpacks with attached tag explaining what the project was and identifying the group. On Sept. 11, 30 backpacks were delivered by Sally and Paul Belisle, Adriann Tucker, Cynthia Peters and Crystal Ward. AREA officers 2017 are, from left, Marsha Haines, treasurer; Crystal Ward, vice president; Susan Cornelius, president; Cynthia Peters, corresponding secretary; and Linda DeSantis, recording secretary.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
