Sheriff Eric Samson of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office said a man has been calling local residents and identifying himself as Lt. Vance Berry in an attempt to scam people out of money.

In a news release, Samson said the man has been calling people and telling them they missed jury duty and a warrant for their arrest has been issued.

Samson said they do not have anyone by the name of Vance Berry in their department, and they do not call residents to say there is a warrant for their arrest.

The news release states that the caller appears to know a lot about the people he calls and sounds convincing. He then tells people if they get a specific amount of money and meet him, “the warrant will be taken care of.”

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a criminal investigation of this activity.

Anyone receiving a call of this nature should contact Sgt. Maurice Drouin at 207-753-2500, ext. 1717.
