LEWISTON — Lillian Marie (Griffin) Davis, of Lewiston, went to her heavenly reward on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at the age of 108. Loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lillian was born in Cambridge, Mass., on May 28, 1909, to Patrick F. Griffin and Mildred Steinhart Griffin. As a very young child she moved with her family to Lewiston, and graduated from St. Patrick’s School and Jordan High School.
Upon graduation she worked as secretary to her father at the Bates Street Cigar & Confectionery Company. During this time she also worked as a model for Ward Brothers and T.J. Murphy Furs. On June 16, 1933, she married Denis A. Davis at St. Patrick’s Church in Lewiston. With the birth of her children she became a stay-at-home mom and with the advent of World War II she involved herself in the war effort, rolling bandages with the Red Cross, working with the women of Lewiston canning vegetables for the military and raising her own Victory Garden.
With her children advancing through school she returned to Bates Street Cigar & Confectionery Company, this time as office manager of the burgeoning business, eventually becoming part owner. She remained with the company until 1967 when the company liquidated.
A faithful child of God and daughter of the church during all these years, Lillian was very active in the work of St. Patrick’s School as chaperone for a myriad of outings, as a fundraiser, and also as a confidant and assistant to the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame in their various enterprises involving the school. She was a loyal and faithful member of the Rosary Sodality up to and including her last years as Sodalist Emerita. Being remembered every Christmas with a floral gift by the Sodality meant a great deal to her.
Lillian is survived by her son, the Rev. John P. Davis of Lewiston; her daughter, Elaine Davis Hartnett of Clinton, N.Y.; her grandson, James (Renee) of New Hartford, N.Y.; her granddaughter, Kathleen (Michael) Makuszak, of Clayville, N.Y.; and great-grandchildren, Sophia, Michael, Lillian, Julia and James, all of New York.
She was predeceased by her husband, Denis; her parents, Patrick and Mildred; and her brothers, Elmer and Lewis Griffin.
The family would like to thank her friend and private CNA, Mary Beaudoin, the staff at Montello Manor and the hospice personnel for the loving care they extended to Lillian.
