GORHAM — Nina Davenport continued her torrid start to the season as the Bates College women’s basketball team earned its first win of the season by beating the University of Southern Maine, 68-56, on Tuesday.

Davenport made 6-of-9 from 3-point range and finished with a game-high 27 points. She also had a game-high eight rebounds and made four steals.

Davenport, a senior from Freeport, scored 31 and 28 points in the Bobcats’ first two games, giving her a 28.7 per-game average. She has made 16-of-36 3-pointers (44 percent).

Sophomore Melanie Binkhorst added 12 points and six rebounds for Bates (1-2), while freshman Julia Middlebrook contributed nine points and six rebounds and had a game-high five steals.

Freshman Kristen Curley led the Huskies (0-4) with 20 points and had six rebounds and four assists.

USM has four tri-county area players on the roster: Farmington’s Miranda Nicely scored six points and pulled down seven boards, Turner’s Chantel Eells finished with two points and six rebounds, Lewiston’s Morgan Eliasen scored two points in 14 minutes, and Rangeley’s Seve Deery-Deraps was scoreless in one minute.

CMCC 73, UMaine-Machias 39

MACHIAS — The Central Maine Community College women’s basketball team wore down the University of Maine at Machias in the first half and then pounced in the second half to pull away for a 73-39 win Tuesday.

The Mustangs led 33-20 at halftime, then outscored the Clippers 30-6 in the third quarter to push the lead to 63-26.

Former Edward Little standout Brooke Reynolds paced CMCC with 18 points in 23 minutes. She also grabbed six rebounds. Jordyn Reynolds had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. Jay’s Alex Bessey scored 13 points, and Eraleena Gethers-Hairston recorded a team-high nine rebounds.

The Mustangs (10-1, 6-0) forced 43 turnovers and made 20 steals.

Caitlyn Lyons led Machias (4-4, 2-3) with 14 points.

St. Joseph’s 84, UMF 57

FARMINGTON — St. Joseph’s College got rolling early and quickly put away the University of Maine at Farmington in an 84-57 women’s basketball victory Tuesday.

Regan McFerran had game-highs of 20 points and nine rebounds for the Monks (2-1), while Kelsi McNamara finished with 18 points and seven assists.

St. Joseph’s outrebounded the Beavers 51-25.

Morgan Crocker led UMF (0-3) with 15 points. McKenna Brodeur added 12 points.

Men’s basketball

Bates 55, Southern Maine 46

GORHAM — The Bates College men’s basketball team defeated the University of Southern Maine 55-46 at Fifield Court on Tuesday.

Neither team shot well. The Bobcats made 22-of-69 from the field (31.9 percent), and the Huskies just 18-of-61 (29.5 percent).

That left plenty of opportunities for rebounds. Bates pulled down 49 (Jeff Spellman and Tom Coyne each pulled down nine and Nick Gilpin had eight) and USM had 46 (Sean Jany and Kevin Weisser had nine apiece).

Coyne topped all scorers with 16 points, and Nick Lynch had 10 more for the Bobcats (2-1). Lynch also had four offensive rebounds (five total).

USM (1-3) was led by the nine points of former Lewiston High School standout Donne Agossou, who also had seven rebounds.

The Bobcats host the University of New England on Sunday at 5 p.m.

UMF 71, St. Joseph’s 69, OT

FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington men’s basketball team won an overtime thriller, 71-69, over St. Joseph’s College at Dearborn Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Bill Ruby scored 17 points and Issac Witham had 16 to lead five Beavers (1-2) in double figures. Weld’s Eric Berry added 12, and Milani Hicks and Dixfield’s Riley Robinson contributed 10 apiece. Hicks also had 14 rebounds.

USM’s Ian Mileikis, an Edward Little High School graduate, topped all scorers with 25 points, pushing his season average to 18.7 points per game. Freshman Jack Casale pulled down a game-high 15 boards for the Huskies (1-2).

The Beavers (1-2) play at Maine Maritime next Tuesday.
