At a ceremony Wednesday at Central Maine Medical Center, the director of the city’s DARE program began distributing identification tags designed to increase children’s safety. The tags, which were purchased by the Lewiston Drug Free Schools Committee, will be distributed to the city’s 450 kindergarten students before being made available later to other parents at no cost. Designed by DARE America of California, the tags are intended to be placed in the soles of shoes and sneakers with children’s names, two emergency telephone numbers and any allergies or special conditions. Though the child I.D. tag currently being advertised on television may work, the assistant nurse manager at CMMC said the DARE tags, which stick to the inside of the shoe with a clear vinyl cover, are better because they don’t require medical centers to purchase special equipment.
