AUBURN — Some new faces have replaced some old ones, but the St. Dominic Academy girls’ hockey team played like the back-to-back state champion it is Saturday in its season-opener.

Goals came in bunches, including a handful by freshmen, as the Saints extended their winning streak to 27 games with a 13-2 victory over Winslow/Gardiner at Norway Savings Bank Arena.

After an uneven first three minutes the Saints (1-0) scored a trio of goals in a 35-second span. Junior Avery Lutrzykowski got the scoring started, then senior Callie Samson added two of her own.

“I think one of the things we’ve strived for is a quick start,” Saints coach Paul Gosselin said. “Last year we were pretty good at that, and we indicated that we want to that as well (this year).”

Junior Bugsy Hammerton got the goal scoring going again four minutes later to make it 4-0, then Samson completed a hat trick a minute later.

“It was just lucky that I was there to pick up the pieces,” Samson said. “Coach says that’s what I’m good at. I guess it really showed today.”

St. Dom’s freshmen started lighting the lamp in the second. Taryn Cloutier scored on the power play two minutes in, then Gigi Ouellette added her first varsity goal just over eight minutes in. In between, Emma Theriault and Dasha Fons sandwiched goals around Lutrzykowski’s second tally.

“It’s new for them, but they’re really skilled players, very good, very fast, they want to do the best they can, and they did,” said Samson, who skated on a line with Cloutier and Ouellette.

“My upperclassmen have been really good with the new freshmen girls, getting them in the system and working them hard,” Gosselin said.

Theriault tallied her second goal with less than a minute to play in the middle period to put the Saints up 11-0.

Lutrzykowski poured in her third and fourth goals in the fourth, but the Black Tigers (0-1) were able to score twice between the two to end the St. Dom’s shutout. Evelyn Hinkley put the Black Tigers on the board just over five minutes in, then Julia Hinkley followed a minute later with one of her own.

“We talked about that. If you don’t score just get out there and play your game, and we’ll see if we can knock one or two in,” Black Tigers coach Alan Veilleux said. “And fortunately we did that, so it was really a big bonus for us to get a couple goals out there and not go home with our first game being a shutout.”

The two Winslow/Gardiner goals came against St. Dom’s freshman goalie Maddy Boulet, who came off the bench late in the second period and stopped four of six shots she faced. Senior starter Payton Winslow made four saves before going to the bench.

Cassie Demers played the whole game in net for the Black Tigers, making 27 saves on 40 shots faced.

“It was a very good test for (Cassie),” Veilleux said. “She saw a lot of shots tonight, and she made some nice saves, but they’ve got some girls that can snipe.”
