The new Bates College Social Union will stand on Campus avenue, corner of Bardwell street, and fronting on Campus avenue. It is to be the beginning of a new quadrangle, which will probably ultimately contain a new dining hall, dormitories and a gymnasium. The interior has a large entrance hall containing the attendant’s desk, post-office and stairs. From it open the various rooms devoted to student activities — athletics, Y.M.C.A. and student organizations, reception room for ladies, the office, a large club room with fireplace, and beyond this, game and reading rooms. The basement will contain a barber shop, toilet and coat room facilities and will provide locker space. In addition there are to be bowling alleys and a billiard room, as well as a second social room.

Lewiston’s First National Store opened for business this morning along with all the other supermarkets in the Twin Cities — marking the first time since Nov. 13 that the store has been open for business. Members of Maine local 385 of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workers of North America, AFL- CIO, ratified a new work contract Nov. 28 at a three-hour meeting in Gardiner Wednesday. Under the new contract, meat cutters and butchers will receive a $9 weekly pay boost over a 33-month period and clerks and stock handlers an $8 weekly increase. A spokesman at the store stated this afternoon that business was “very good” and that all employees were back at work, after the work stoppage.

The Nov. 30 projected possible closing date for the Poland post office has passed without a closing notice from the U.S. Postal Service. In August, the service posted a notice announcing that the closing of the office with zip code 04273, was being considered and giving users until Oct. 27 to respond to the proposal. No word has been received from postal officials since then. Regulations require a 30-day posted notice for actual closing.
