CANTON — The season of giving is in full swing, and the fifth annual Festival of Wreaths on Saturday was a perfect place to give a little, with the possibility of getting something in return.

About 46 wreaths were raffled off during the festival, which took place Nov. 25, 26, 30, and Dec. 2 and 3. The wreaths were donated by local businesses and individuals, and all proceeds will go to the Canton Fire Department.

The drawing will take place at 4 p.m Sunday at the fire station.

Volunteers for the event and Auxiliary members Marsha Whittemore of Hartford and Carolyn Gray of Canton said the event raises about $1,000 every year, and the turnout this year was better than the last.

“We’ve been very busy today, and made a lot of money,” Gray said.

Whittemore said she volunteers to contribute something to the Canton Fire Department, since it serves Hartford as well.

“If they’re going to cover us for a fire, I might as well volunteer and represent our town,” she said.

Gray said the proceeds buy things for the department that the budget doesn’t cover.

The donated wreaths varied in size, shape and color. One wreath held a variety of scratch tickets, another held candy. One made a circle of Matchbox cars, and the wreath donated by Steven’s Small Engine Repair in Canton had an assortment of automotive tools.

“A lot of the wreaths are handmade,” Gray said. “The businesses and townspeople who want to do their part, some donate more than one. They are so enthusiastic and creative.”
