RUMFORD — Frances Savage (Sadie) Carlton, 94, of Dixfield, passed away Friday, Dec. 1, in Rumford.

Frances was born May 2, 1923, in Rangeley, a daughter of Homer S. Savage and Lena Fay Raymond Savage. Frances lived in Dixfield since 1929 and she graduated from Dixfield High School, Class of 1941.

On July 3, 1942, Frances married Kermit G. Carlton; he passed away March 23, 1992. They moved to Worthley Pond in 1975 until 1987, and then moved back to Dixfield in 1987.

Frances worked with the Girl Scouts for 10 years as a leader in her 50s and 60s.

She was a member of the Dixfield Congregational Church, a Life Member and Past President and Treasurer of Swasey Torrey Unit 100 with the American Legion Auxiliary. Frances was also a Life Member and Past Matron of Monitor Chapter O.E.S. until it disbanded. She transferred to Purity Chapter and the Mount Zircon Chapter in Rumford.

Frances was also Past Treasurer of Dixfield Dirigo Alumni Association.

She worked at Holmes Market for 27 years, and for Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice as a senior companion for 10 years, sponsored by the Cooperative Extension of the University of Maine; having been one of the first senior companions. In the year 2000, she received the Volunteer Award from the Home Care Alliance of Maine at the Blaine House in Augusta for Volunteer of the Year.

Frances enjoyed bowling, softball, and car racing. She was an avid fan of Labonte Boys, Terry and Bobby.

Her children were the most important part of her life, and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Frances also enjoyed her vegetable garden and making pickles, traveling with her daughter Eileen, Joyce and her sister Hazel.

Surviving are two sons, Dale Carlton and wife Diane of Dixfield, and Raymond Carlton and wife Joette of Hebron; a daughter, Eileen Worster of Arundel; a sister, Hazel Kennedy of Mexico; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, a brother, Sgt. Donald E. Savage in WWII, Nov. 11, 1943, and a sister, Nellie Savage Beach of Poland, Maine, on July 23, 1996.
