“A lot of people need help,” said Elizabeth Lane, 85, as she helped count and sort canned goods for her daughter Barbara Lane’s 10th annual food drive Friday morning.

And while Elizabeth Lane and her cousin, Norine Clark of Dixfield, worked together sorting the items in the cold building that used to serve as Clark’s craft shop, Barbara Lane and her friend, Muffy Ellis of Burnham, were outside waving down the traffic to bring their attention to the food drive.

Every year, Elizabeth Lane also sews two outfits for an American Girl-type of doll and the doll and outfits are raffled off during the drive, with all proceeds going to Servant’s Heart Food Pantry of Peru and the Dixfield Common Food Pantry. She loves dolls and creating the outfits “keeps me going,” she said.

Elizabeth Lane has been making crafts all of her life and this year she made items such as cloth dolls, afghans and baby sweaters for fairs in Rumford, Turner and Oxford Hills.

Once again this year, people can donate $5 or five nonperishable items for the food drive held Friday and Saturday at the Peru Fire Station from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In exchange, Barbara has designed 200 T-shirts commemorating the drive, to be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Each year, Barbara creates a different design for the event, and this year’s T-shirts feature a polar bear with a Christmas tree design.

Barbara Lane is grateful to everyone who donates to the food drive, she said. “Your time, your help, your donations and your smiles mean more to us than you will ever know.”
