WEST PARIS — Sunday services at the First Universalist Church of West Paris are announced for January. Worship services start at 9 a.m. followed by refreshments and are provided by a combination of guest speakers, the Worship Service Committee and the Rev. Fayre Stephenson.

Jan. 7: “Bending Toward Justice,” led by Stephenson. The sources of wisdom and inspiration found in the civil rights movement will be explored.

Jan. 14: “When You Knew, Grampa, What did You do?,” led by guest speaker, Allen Armstrong. Doing something about mitigating climate change even when things can seem hopeless. Armstrong, a retired mechanical engineer, has been educating about climate change since 2004.

Jan. 21: “Father Thomas Barnes,” led by Stephenson. The Rev. Thomas Barnes was called Father Barnes because he was considered to be the “father” of Universalism in Maine. He was also the first minister of the First Universalist Church of Norway.

Jan. 28: “Connecting Poetry and People,” led by Richard Blanco, U.S. presidential inaugural poet. Selected by President Obama as the fifth inaugural poet in U.S. history,  Blanco is the youngest and the first Latino, immigrant and gay person to serve in such a role. He serves as the first Education Ambassador for the Academy of American Poets.
