A longstanding policy prohibiting alcoholic beverages on school property prompted the Lewiston School Committee Monday to delay action on a request from the Knights of Columbus to use a Lewiston High School football field as the site of the 1993 Franco Festival. In response to the group’s request to use the practice field at LHS for the three-day event, board members said their own policy prohibiting alcoholic beverages on school property would make a positive vote very difficult. “It’s an admirable cause, and it’s very difficult to say no, but this is a rigid policy banning alcoholic beverages. I feel quite strongly that we need to stand by it,” said at-large committee member John Allberti. Fern Cloutier, co-chairman of the Franco Festival 1993 Committee, explained to board members Monday that the practice field is ideal for the festival due to the abundance of space and parking at the school. “It would be a perfect place. There’s an 8-foot fence all around it and the site is well secured,” he said.
