Deeply stirred by a government-inspired dispatch front Washington to the effect that “breweries, churches and other non-essential industries may have to close because of the fuel shortage.” Lewiston-Auburn pastors met Friday morning and framed a courteous but sweepingly significant statement. They believe that thousands of young men facing death in the trenches would fail the American cause utterly should the moral and spiritual backing of the church be removed, and they point out that the placing of the manufactories of beer in the same category as Christ’s church is “too monstrous for comment.”

Auburn’s application for funds to execute its Great Falls Urban Renewal project in the downtown area has been approved by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Notification of the approval came in the form of a joint release by the offices of Second District Congressman William D. Hathaway and U. S. Senator Edmund S. Muskie. The grant is in the amount of $1,738,849.

A center to care for people with sleeping disorders is scheduled to open in the fall when St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center acquires new equipment to serve central and western Maine. Dr. Ralph Harder will act as director of the center.
