YONKERS, N.Y. —Sister Mary Gillespie, CND (Sister St. Agnes of the Sacred Heart), died suddenly at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Yonkers, N.Y., on Sunday, Jan. 21.

Sister had been a devoted member of the Congregation of Notre Dame for 65 years and a dedicated science teacher for most of her adult life, teaching middle school students in Ohio, Maine, New York, Illinois and Rhode Island. Science was her love.

Her curiosity in that field remained constant throughout her life and was supported by her well-developed powers of observation — she missed nothing. Sister Mary had a quiet presence among us, self-contained but clearly with us.

She loved people, loved being among them, becoming involved in their stories, treasuring her relationship with them for many years. Mary loved her family, her colleagues, her students and her CND sisters. Surely all those groups enjoyed and were enriched by her sense of humor which was gentle, almost impish, one which could reach out and take you by surprise. We could always count on Mary who had an inexhaustible spirit of generosity and was quite creative in finding ways to be generous. We knew Sister Mary as a person who had a love for life, for people and service. She will be missed.
