100 years ago, 1918
Lewiston and Auburn were having another Garfield holiday Monday, and the two cities looked and felt like a cold winter Sunday. Food stores were closed at noon, as per the order of the fuel commissioner, and the rest of the town hadn’t even opened. The theaters were allowed to run and many took advantage of this in the afternoon. A big attendance is looked for them tonight and at the polo game in City Hall. There was still the fellow who forgot to get “his smokes” before noon, and the woman who wanted candy for the matinee, but these had to go without.

50 years ago, 1968
(Photo Caption) This writer-photographer team from Look Magazine toured Auburn Sunday and Monday taking photographs and asking questions about the city as part of a review of the community and its status as a finalist in the All-America Cities competition. Pictured are William Hedgepeth, the writer half of the team, reviewing with his cameraman, Joseph Baldwin, some of the material they gathered during their stay in the city. They leave the city Tuesday morning after having spent Monday touring the city’s schools and industrial plants and talking with city officials.

25 years ago, 1993
A crowd of more than 60 people turned out Thursday for the first meeting of Auburn Partners in Education, a group seeking to increase the community’s involvement in setting priorities and making decisions related to education in the city. “We’re thrilled with the number of people who attended,” Mary Lou Hofmann, one of the group’s four steering committee members, said afterward. “This is going to be a long process and it’ll be interesting to see how the focus of the group evolves.”
