SOUTH PARIS — James Leo Cosgrove, 91, of Lewiston, died Sunday, Feb. 11, in South Paris at the Maine Veterans Home.

He was born at his family home in Strawberry Patch, Lewiston, Aug. 23, 1926. He had a passion for sports throughout his life. His earliest memories were of pickup baseball and hockey games with neighborhood friends. He was very proud of being a part of St. Patrick’s School’s winning baseball team in the early 1930s. He was an undefeated professional boxer using the alias Jimmy Mason and captain of the St. Patrick’s bowling and golf leagues. He moved to Connecticut for work and lived there before and after serving his country in the Korean War. He returned to Lewiston after his father’s passing to take care of his mother. Jimmy met his wife, Evelyn Ferguson, at a Lewiston hockey game. After a short courtship they married and lived a happy life in Sabattus.

During this time, he worked at Bath Iron Works in the electrical department. He played golf at Apple Valley and won the Bath Iron Works league golf championship. He loved hockey and had a season pass with his friend, Bert Gendron, to both the Nordiques and the Maineiacs. He will be remembered as a kind and loving man.

He is survived by his stepson, Frank “Skip” Mills Jr.; and nieces and nephews from the Cosgrove, Maybury, Bouchard and Cameron families.

Predeceased by his parents, Bernie and Katie Cosgrove; wife, Evelyn Cosgrove; stepdaughter Linda Soto; three sisters, Etta Maybury, Mary Bouchard and Theresa Cameron; and two brothers, Mike Cosgrove and Buddy Cosgrove.
