100 years ago, 1918

One of the points brought out at the session of the Housewives’ league here was that the committee on better drama and films, which includes Miss Kate Anthony of Auburn and Mrs. C. Norton of Lewiston, held steadfastly to the ideal of what was happily termed “safe and sane pictures,” not merely for one evening or afternoon a week, but for all the time. It was a satisfaction to many that they could report a distinct gain made the last year over the year previous, through the cooperation of the management of the local theaters. The request for this was backed by a score of different societies and more than a thousand women living here.

50 years ago, 1968
The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department is currently about half way through its modernization project involving the department’s criminal records. Sheriff Robert W. Bonenfant said Chief Deputy Rosaire Martel is handling the project, and has been at work on it about two weeks. Under the new system, he said, his department will be able to “pull” a complete rundown on some 6,000 individuals handled by this department over the years. This will replace an outmoded system which required going from one file to another, and making a series of cross-checks. Sometimes, at least four separate checks were necessary before a complete rundown was obtained.

25 years ago, 1993
Lewiston’s Joey Gamache won a unanimous decision over Michael Grow of Lewiston, Idaho, at the Central Maine Civic Center Friday night. The fight, which got under way at 10:30 p.m., was over shortly before 11:30. This was Gamache’s first fight since he lost to Tony Lopez last October.
