The idea of building a civic center or a multi purpose center in Lewiston is not new to area residents. Many still remember that some 20 years ago prospects looked good for the construction of a War Memorial Civic Center at the rear of Lewiston High School. At that time, city officials, businessmen, civic leaders and interested citizens became enthused over the plans for the building. Unfortunately, the plans remained plans and the center itself never materialized. Twenty years later, Lewiston’s city fathers and other interested individuals have started the wheels rolling on plans for a civic center in Lewiston. This time it’s being called a multi-purpose center. Maybe, this time around, the plans will materialize and become reality. The War Memorial of 1947 was the brainchild of the mayor of Lewiston at the time, the late Louis P. Gagne.

Auburn city councilors will again consider whether to create a committee to study biomedical waste at a meeting Tuesday. The item was tabled two weeks ago when Mayor Richard Trafton suggested some changes to the structure of the committee. The group is being created to look at community concerns surrounding a Mid-Maine Waste Action Corps plan to incinerate medical waste as a way to increase income and lower the price of trash disposal for its member communities. The committee of city residents would be asked to report its findings within six months.
